Louis Vuitton Ready-To-Wear Spring/Summer 2014 Collection

In January this year, I streamed the Louis Vuitton Men's Fall/Winter Fashion Show and it is still available HERE. The Ready-To-Wear Spring Summer 2014 fashion show is being held today and will be streamed live online again, with the video being available afterwards. The collection is by Men's Style Director Kim Jones under the artistic direction of Marc Jacobs. You can interact with Louis Vuitton via Twitter with the hashtags #LVLive and #LouisVuitton as well as mentioning the official Louis Vuitton Twitter Handle @LouisVuitton. Curated tweets will be featured on the social room wall, found...

Digital Crates: TVOne’s Unsung

Our stories hold lessons that others could benefit from. While there are those whose journey is smooth, without nary a ruffle, for most of us, life is an exercise in experience gathering, not always positive but generally of value, even when it doesn't seem to at the time. The idea of artists being overnight sensations is one that some try to push but the reality is that, for many, the trip to stardom is littered with potholes, burning drums and other potentially apocalyptic trials. In some ways, this is what makes the achievement even sweeter. We put people on pedestals. We celebrate their...

Words From TV Fathers

The Good Men Project, which was started in 2009, is one of those sites and twitter accounts I follow because it often shares interesting thoughts related to the multi-dimensions of being a man. They define themselves as follows: We are a community of 21st Century thought leaders around the issue of men’s roles in modern life. We explore the world of men and manhood in a way that no media company ever has, tackling the issues and questions that are most relevant to men’s lives. We write about fatherhood, family, sex, ethics, war, gender, politics, sports, pornography, and aging. We shy away...

Technology In The 80s

I remember life before the cellphone. I remember when my father's office moved from a normal typewriter to the advanced electric typewriter. I remember when they first bought a fax machine.  I remember marveling at how you could put a piece of paper in your machine and the person on the other side received an exact replica. I remember when people had telex addresses on their business cards. I also remember the sound a modem made when it tried to connect. Every time I think about it, I hear it. I remember holding my breath in anticipation of that last screech that meant you were finally...

The Art of Life Eps 3 Part 2

Last week's episode of The Art of Life was broken into two parts and part 2 is now live. In this part, we talk about a smartphone charging station from Blue Lounge, a Toyota concept car and the Renault Clio.

Dove And The Forensic Artist

Sometimes brands get it right. In a desire to place their products and services top of mind, they create something that truly resonates. Something that speaks to the reality of our lives. Dove, with their Real Beauty Sketches campaign, got it right, in my humble opinion. At the heart of the ad is the idea that how women see themselves is different from how others see them. An FBI-trained forensic artist drew sketches of women featured from their own descriptions of themselves and from descriptions from others. As a man who has had to navigate the 'does this make me look fat?' or 'I wish my...

The Art of Life Eps 3, Part 1

For this episode of the Art of Life, we decided to break it into two parts. In Part 1, we look at educational computing for children and the next level in staying in touch for those in long distance relationships, from Durex. Look out for Part 2 next week. Let us know what your thoughts are, if there is anything you'd like us to randomly chat about, blah, blah.

Man Of Steel

It looks like film is the new battleground for cellphone manufacturers. The first instance I really remember of a phone having a significant 'role' in a film was Nokia's 3110 in the Matrix. More recently, Sony Xperia T has been pushed as the 'James Bond' phone and I've been to a couple of film premieres that were sponsored by smartphone manufacturers. The latest in this budding relationship between smartphone, in this case Nokia, and film is Man of Steel. Like many kids who grew up in the 70s and 80s, Superman was THE superhero. At some stage, the superhero space became extremely saturated...

Art of Life (Eps. 2)

Finally, episode two of the Art of Life, a concept that Steve Slotow, Quinton Jones and I are building, gradually. First episode went out about a fortnight ago - and yes, my last blog post - but the momentum is starting to build and we'll find its true identity as we do more episodes. Please enjoy. Once again, thanks to 21 Tanks for serving as our set. Share your thoughts, ideas, interesting things you come across, etc on ourartoflife@gmail.com. And please come back.

The Art of Life (Episode 1)

Steve Slotow is someone who I've been bumping into at, primarily, tech launches over the last two years. We'd chat briefly about this and that and get back to our lives. We both write and engage with content, particularly technology and digital related, from a more inclusive lifestyle perspective, rather than the solely geeky, nitty-gritty spec driven one - don't doubt we do like specs and features as well. So, when he approached me about starting a web series engaging with all of these spaces and more, I jumped at the opportunity. We've decided to call it The Art of Life. A director,...

Random Thoughts: Justin Bieber

A truly random post after an extended period of silence. This past weekend, I joined thousands of tiny and teenyboppers in the trek to FNB Stadium to watch Justin Bieber perform courtesy of 5FM on a night when many a father was a giant in their daughter's eyes, at least for the night. It was also Mother's Day and to see so many mothers and daughters bonding was also wonderful. My view of Bieber was altered by the documentary Never Say Never which gave a peek into his life before and after his discovery and the people around him, including his manager Scooter Braun who 'discovered' him....

Snoop’s Reincarnated

Snoop Lion's new reggae album Reincarnated has been posted online to live stream until the release of the album next week. I have said before I'm not sure how I feel about this reincarnation but I suspect this is one of those albums that will need multiple listens and a fresh, unbiased view. For example, with Lighters Up, while I am feeling the production, I would have loved it more as simply a Mavado and Popcaan track. On the other hand, I'm definitely feeling So Long. The  featured artists are kind of random and include Miley Cyrus and Drake....

Naked Ape Style 2013

At the South African Fashion Week April 11-15, 2013, a couple of designers had installations instead of full fashion shows and my favourite was Shaldon Kopman's Naked Ape which was both creative in how it was setup as a fully sensory experience with a video taking attendees on a journey that tied to the models dotted around the room. I have been fortunate enough to have known Shaldon for about a decade and have been inspired by how he has built both his personal brand and that of Naked Ape. I had the opportunity to visit his studio and the one thing you are guaranteed with from Shaldon is...

Motorcycle Madness

A few months ago, I decided that I am middle-aged enough to get a motorcycle and randomly ride somewhere on Sundays for pancakes and scones, joining the mass exodus of men and women who do the breakfast runs on weekends out of Joburg. My last experience on a bike was about 20 years ago, messing around with friends so I wrangled my way into the BMW Rider Academy for their Novice course. A full day of some theory - where what is on a motorbike - and a lot of riding. Had a lot of fun and it's made me want a bike even more, especially because, to do the next few courses, I need my own bike. I...

The Facts According To….

In my job, I'm sent a great many press releases and packages, all vying for my limited time and attention. Yesterday I had a beat boxer and rapper extolling the benefits of Russian Bear vodka. This morning, I received a folder with a Stylus USB pen attached to it and a two-pager with my "curriculum vitae", pulled from multiple online sources. Under Other Interests and Hobbies, my favourite and most random is "thinking of tackling yoga". Been thinking of that for a minute now. On the USB pen, is an animated video from Kelly Group unpacking the employment/unemployment situation in South...

Poem: Shane Koyczan – To This Day Project

A friend tweeted me a poem. The tweet said, "You're into spoken word. How's this for art." I'd never heard of Shane Koyczan until the moment I pressed play, and I am better for it. When someone uses the right words to paint emotions in such a way that, even if it isn't your reality, you feel ... it is an amazing experience. To This Day Project is a poem from the Canadian poet, author and performer to highlight the impact of bullying on children and how this affects their lives into adulthood. A beautifully written poem, poignant, sad and painfully honest....
