Grooming: Find Your Signature With Playboy

Mar 16, 2016 | Lifestyle

The silhouette of a rabbit wearing a bowtie is probably one of the most recognisable logos globally. In South Africa, Playboy Deodorant which has, since 2010, been owned by AMKA Products, is one of the fastest growing Male Deodorant brands. It was also “Coolest Male Deodorant” at the 2015 Sunday Times Generation Next Brand awards

“Fragrance speaks the loudest on a subliminal level.” – Marian Bendeth

To be honest, as a 40-something year old, the deodorant has always seemed for a consumer much younger than I. I did use it years ago in my 20s but have since moved onto other body sprays. Playboy has now released a Signature range which is targeted at those of us who are a little older. They are positioning it to speak to “a man who is looking for a sophisticated and ‘signature’ scent.” In the press release, Playboy brand manager Geoffrey Holtes says, “Every man possesses a signature – a pen, watch, dance, handshake, style – a fragrance – it sets him apart from the rest.”

The fragrance options are Bold, Presence, Ambition and Legend and it has been created to have “twice the fragrance of standard deodorants. There’s nothing worse than using a deodorant that’s overpowered by ‘natural body fragrance’ halfway through the day, especially considering most of us live very long days, jumping between multiple spaces.

“Odors have a power of persuasion stronger than that of words, appearances, emotions, or will. The persuasive power of an odor cannot be fended off, it enters into us like breath into our lungs, it fills us up, imbues us totally. There is no remedy for it.” – Patrick Süskind, Perfume: The Story of a Murderer

I’ve been experimenting with the different fragrances – leaning towards Legend – to both find what I enjoy most as well as what pairs well with my cologne. I tend to wear fragrances according to my mood and so the exercise is being able to find the right combinations with the different fragrances I have. That’s part of the joy of fragrances. As with fashion, it’s about finding the right combination. And not overdoing it.

If you have used Playboy deodorant, please share your thoughts on the products in the comments section and you could win R1000 voucher from Superbalist and a Playboy Signature hamper. The winner will be chosen randomly on April 1st.
