Nokia CK-200 Car Kit & Other Accessories

Nokia recently announced the impending arrival in South Africa of its CK-200 car kit. It should be available in SA from June and estimated retail price is R1,500 uninstalled. Car kits have tended to be financially inaccessible and / or complicated to install and the CK-200 looks like it is going to have a significant impact on the market. It is said to be easy to install, with three possible installations possible, via direct input, ISO cable or external speaker. The device itself is a ‘screen’ that can be mounted on the dashboard which contains everything you need, including an embedded 9mm...

Nokia N900

Being a layman, when I first heard that there was a new Nokia smart phone that was the closest to a mini-laptop as they have ever come, I looked to the geeks I knew. It was towards end of last year and I was attending a couple of Nokia events with those in the know who all reckoned it was Nokia’s best ever device. I had the opportunity to briefly fiddle with it but, at the time, it wasn’t going to be available in South Africa. The hype around and response to it from the techno gurus made Nokia change their mind and it will now be available sometime this year. While a bit heavy and bulky, the...

Nokia’s Mobile Doctor

A couple of months ago, I did a little write-up on Nokia’s Calling All Innovators competition which was to give Application Developers the opportunity to create mobile and web applications relevant to the South African market. At a small, intimate event at Primi Piatti at Melrose Arch, Nokia announced the Top 10 submissions and the overall winner. Nokia received over 125 submissions primarily from South Africa, followed by Kenya, but also including Pakistan, Germany, US, India and Bahrain. The Top 10 are: 1st – Afridoctor by 20fourlabs Afridoctor is a personall mobile health clinic, which...

A layman’s thoughts – Nokia developer competition

I love gadgets & technology. I’m not an expert but I like what gadgets & tech can do for my life. I own two cellphones. Yes, one is a Nokia. If you have interacted with me, you will know that I am passionate about Africa. And I believe that, if there ever was a time for Africa to start realising its true potential, it is now. Information, content is king. The means of accessing and hoarding information is easier. Well, easier than it was trying to establish oneself during the industrial age. No-one expected the cellphone to penetrate the African continent the way it did. And Africans...

Nokia E75 Launch in SA

I've been underground for last couple of months so I didn't score an invite to the launch of the Nokia E75. They were nice enough to send me a video of said launch though :-).  Expanding my horizons with this blog and exploring a lot more than just my ramblings and poetry so decided to share it with you. I did see Toby Shapshak there, Editor of Stuff mag; a man to follow if you are even mildly interested in technology and lifestyle. httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UR6IXUjPZyU Nokia seems to be pushing on all fronts, from business, play to music.  My understanding is that the E-series is the...

A layman’s thoughts on Nokia Music Store

The bottom-line is this: all these great things happen in the world and Africa tends to be an after-thought, in relation to these happenings. Yes, we do lag behind in a number of instances but how do you think it feels when you are perceived as being at the bottom of the human barrel?  Not particularly pleasurable! Anyway, this is not a rant on the perception of Africa, but rather as a reaction to how it is hard to get the cool stuff here prompted, strangely enough, by the Nokia Music Store recently launched in South Africa. With the level of mobile penetration in Africa and the fact...
