Red Bull Beat Battle

November 22, 2011 Lifestyle

The 2011 Red Bull Beat Battle was a fascinating merger of styles and genres as 8 dance crews, primarily from Cape Town, Johannesburg and Durban came together to battle for the title Champions. From Pantsula and Krumping to freestyle and Isbhujwa, the rowdy and enthusiastic crowd watched Artistic Intelligence take the title in a tightly contested final with Ubuntu from Cape Town.

You Started, What Next?

September 20, 2011 Lifestyle

Beyond starting something, one of the greater challenges is maintaining once you have started. Sometimes, it is easy to get caught up in the newness and actually initiate something but what happens when it gets to the less sexy part. Many of us fade. In participating in the National Start Something Day campaign with Sanlam, this is a something that I have continuously been cognisance off; the risk of starting to procrastinate and fade. It is awesome that we Start Something, even better that we follow the full course.

Taking Pretty Pictures

July 5, 2011 Lifestyle

I was invited to take part in Sanlam’s National Start Something Day campaign. I went into the very long list of ‘want to dos’ and decided to try my hand at photography, in particular learning how to use a D-SLR camera. I enrolled at the College of Digital Photography for a Fundamentals of Digital Photography course. For the first two lessons, we learned about ISO, Shutter Speed, Aperture, White Balance and Light.

I Just Started Something …

May 30, 2011 Lifestyle

Life is fascinating in its habits. How often have you had a moment, when it felt like everything was coming together perfectly? Or when you meet – and really connect with – someone and you discover you’ve been in the same spaces for years but never met. It is like the universe is saying … [...]

Has It Come To This? (CP)

April 3, 2011 Lifestyle

We seem to celebrate mediocrity and this has carried over into much of what the mass media pushes as great music. To find great, classic music, one has to look beyond what is thrown at us and seek out the gems outside mainstream.

The Media Decides? (CP)

March 12, 2011 Lifestyle

The influence of the media and entertainment on society is unquantifiable even as those sectors endeavour to reflect society. They guide the discussions through what they put out. In Africa, we have often talked of how it is the West that determines the perception of us. This is not totally the case. The power bases on the continent – like South Africa and Nigeria – do so as well through the programming created on and for channels like MTV Base and Channel O. Because these spaces, based in SA, determine what is put out as being representative of Africa, can we comfortably say, this is the full picture?

Death of Television (CP)

February 6, 2011 Lifestyle

Written September 6th, 2009 I have always sought pastimes that allow me to escape from the trials of reality, albeit temporarily. From books, film to music and games, I’ve been known to shut myself off from the real world for extended periods of time. In fact, a strategy game called Age of Empires nearly killed [...]

Mind Your Language (CP)

January 30, 2011 Lifestyle

Written September 29th, 2009 This is a mini-rant. Social media has become all-consuming. We live our lives in the public space, randomly sharing our private moments with a world we don’t necessarily know. It started with email, moved to MySpace and found a home in Facebook. Friends you hadn’t seen for years and people you [...]

January 23, 2011 Lifestyle

Written on September 22nd, 2009 Do you ever sit and wonder what music will sound like in 10 years from now? 20 years? With all the talk that television and cinema are going to dwindle in popularity, do you ever wonder what you will be watching in the future? Do you ever look at your [...]

January 16, 2011 Lifestyle

Written on September 15th, 2009 Music is an amazing creature. It caresses the heart. It strokes the spirit. It inspires the intellect. It has served as soundtrack to a multitude of souls since the dawn of mankind and it continues to provide refuge, comfort and happiness. Despite the millions of songs created, across countless genres, [...]

We Manifest Word (CP)

January 9, 2011 Lifestyle

written august 8th, 2009 For the writer, the pen is a paintbrush and the words are the colour delicately laid on the canvas. The words bring with them beauty, and sorrow, and laughter. They evoke the full range of human emotion and experience inspiring the soul to do more and be more, sometimes violently, sometimes [...]

In The Beginning (CP – 08.09.2009)

January 3, 2011 Lifestyle

Late in 2009, I was fortunate enough to be given the opportunity to write a column for City Press‘ City Pulse, which is what the entertainment and lifestyle supplement was called – it is now called 7. It is always interesting for one to go back and revisit thoughts and ideas expressed and, as a [...]

What Do You Know About Breakin’?

October 11, 2010 Lifestyle

I just had to post this. This clip was posted on my Facebook timeline by ‘a friend’; it brought back so many memories. And, lately, I’ve been doing a lot of reminiscing, particularly in terms of music, but also with film. In 1984/85, in the small city of Maseru, Lesotho, a small b-boy (breakdancing) crew [...]
