I promise I will post on something other than music soon but I had to share this one. And yes, it is another artist covering a Michael Jackson song after I just shared Aloe Blacc doing Billie Jean. I just did a brief ‘review’ of the soundtrack for Think Like A Man on the Destiny Man website and Quadron’s cover of MJ’s Baby Be Mine (from the Thriller album) stood out.
I had never heard of them and had to do the prerequisite google search. They are a Danish duo consisting of singer Coco Maja Hastrup Karshøj and musician/producer Robin Hannibal who met while part of a electronica collective called Boom Clap Bachelors. Interestingly, Robin Hannibal has worked with a range of artists, including Aloe Blacc, and is constantly collaborating but it looks like Quadron is his primary focus now. I absolutely love the arrangement of the song. They’ve taken ownership of it in a way that doesn’t diminish the original nor does it get overshadowed by the original. Both absolutely work. Quadron’s version is melancholic, begging slightly, in contrast to MJ’s which is a lot more uptempo and celebratory. One is gentle, the other is funky.
Coco has a beautiful voice and I’ve since started exploring their other music and haven’t been disappointed so far.
