In 2016, Visa launched Visa Checkout in South Africa, designed to make purchasing online easier as well as secure. Security continues to be a factor that makes us uncomfortable about buying things online, especially from a South African context. In a study by Effective Measure, sponsored by IAB South Africa and Visa:
- 53% of those who don’t buy online said they did not trust online payments indicated zero liability or some form of online protection as a motivating factor to engage in more online shopping. 58% say a delivery payment option would motivate them to do more online payments;
- 48% of online shoppers prefer to pay by card while 23% would prefer to pay on delivery;
- Credit cards, bank transfers and debit cards are online shoppers’ preferred methods of payment when shopping online; and
While e-commerce continues to grow, we still lag behind other parts of the world, in terms of online buying. With Visa Checkout, Visa seeks to alleviate the security concerns buy both establishing relationships with local e-commerce retailers as well as by ensuring that they remove the angst with a ‘single’ point for submitting the necessary information like name, card number and billing address.
“Visa Checkout offers a simple, one-time enrolment process to capture a customer’s billing and address information. Customers can complete all future transactions using just their username and password with no further information required. Customers also never leave the merchant website so the entire process is seamless and fast.”
Globally, there are said to be over 17 million online shoppers using Visa Checkout shopping from “around 300,000 large and small merchants globally. In South Africa, three key merchants include Yuppiechef.com, Webtickets and Ticketpro.
